Enniskillen 2-8 Tempo 0-13
In a game not without debate, the Gaels came back from 6 points down to claim the U12 2009 League Title. However the game will be remembered more for the skill and endeavour of both sides than perhaps the final result. It would remiss not to point out the contribution that Tempo played in this, but a belief from the Gaels team even when behind, saw them lead for the only time at the final whistle.
The first half was a very even affair, reflective of the nerves both sides showed with neither team gaining any superiority. Points were traded throughout the first half with Tempo going a point up just before half time at 0-5 to 0-4.
All the drama was reserved for the second half as early Gaels possesion was not translated into scores and then Tempo forging ahead with a flurry of points from play and placed balls. When six points ahead Tempo had a chance for a couple of goals that would have sealed the result but these were thwarted by Ronan Beattie in goals and probably kept Gaels in the contest. However it did awake the team and with the midfield now flooded in an effort to block Tempos previous dominance in this sector, the Enniskillen forwards now found the space they had been lacking in the game until this point. First a speculative shot from Ronan Quinn, when fed by Conor Goodwin, was deflected into the Tempo goal and suddenly the game switched. The Gaels were now dominating the match and the question would be if they had enough time to catch up. A second goal chance followed shortly afterwards but this was well parried by the Tempo keeper and the game looked lost. With time nearly up, another neat build up saw Neil McDermott shoot low past the keeper leaving only a point in the match and just rewards for his performance throughout. The equalising point soon followed from Conor Goodwin after a quickly taken 45 and it was left to Brendan Lilly to shoot over what was the winning point with his weaker foot. There was still time for Tempo but heartbreak for them with a scoreable free drifting just wide on the final whistle.
For Tempo their standout player was Rory McCaffery, he was the dominant midfielder for most of the contest, though his battle with Ciaran Smith was enthralling throughout. He was ably supported by Declan McCarron in the forward line who was the main scoring threat. However the full back line for Gaels in captain Conor Carney who played a third of the match with a fracture in his wrist, Sean Tierney and Johnny Cassidy successfully blotted out the goal threat from Tempo from blocks and breaking ball.
For the Gaels Eddy Boyd was certainly a contender for man of the match from centre half back as his continual probes into the opposing half were the source of many of the Gaels scores. In the forward line Neil McDermott had a productive hour and picked up a lot of the possession from the midfielders and half backs and also finished top scorer for Enniskillen, while the re-introduction of Brendan Lilly was to have a big bearing on the final outcome as both goals came indirectly from balls won by him.
